_   The assignment is under 2nd Marking Period Assignments - Nov./December.  Please post your first blog by January 9.

Each week, include the following information on the blog post: (a) news sources (author, date, headline, web site if applicable) – 3 required and 1 additional sources;  (b) summary (who, what, where, when, why/how) based on ALL of the articles;  (c)  any changes from the previous week (starting December 19), and (d)  how the issue / events during the week relate to themes in the course.

Themes / topics  in the course include:

Federalism  Civil Rights / Liberties   Civic Action
Federal separation of powers/ checks and balances
The Media   Human rights         Congress
Policy-making (laws)    Interest groups     The Presidency
Economic policy Non-governmental agencies/organizations
The Courts     Social policy     Military policy
The Bureaucracy (government agencies)
Environmental policy   Political parties   Campaigns / Elections
Citizenship      International relations   Pluralism/diversity

The blog post is worth (a) news sources – up to 16 points (4 points each)   (b) summary (15 points for each component of a summary and evidence that all the news sources are synthesized)  (c)  change from the previous week (9 points),   (d)  paragraph explaining the issue/event’s connection to the course theme (identify at least one theme and give explanation  - 10 points) .  The post will count as a writing assignment and is worth a total of 50 points each week except for the week of Dec. 12 (41 points since to (c)

EXAMPLE:
(a)  New York Times, "A Futuristic Plan for NJ," 12/1/11
CNN, "New Jersey Leads the Way,"  12/3/11
Christian Sci. Monitor, "Is NJ First?"  12/5/11
Phila. Inquirer, "NJ Leaves PA behind," 12/2/11
(b)  New Jersey's new environmental policy, lead by the NJ legislature and environmental organizations such as the Clean Air Council , have agreed to a ten year plan to decrease air pollution.  The plan includes cutting car and power plant emissions and a surcharge or tax on anyone with a car more than 5 years old and power plants with emission levels above 1.7.  The decision to improve NJ's air quality was in response to a federal report which listed NJ as the 38th state for air quality.
(c)  Last week I also researched clean air policies.  NJ's policy is different from Pennsylvania.  The Pennsylvania legislature refuses to pass laws to decrease car emissions.
(d)  This issues is related to "Environmental Policy" and federalism.  Car emissions are regulate by both the state and federal government but are primarily a state issue.  Air quality is an environmental issue.

With $30 Billion Arms Deal, U.S. Bolsters Saudi Ties
By MARK LANDLER and STEVEN LEE MYERS 12/29/11

White House, Saudi Arabia Sign $30B F-15 Deal
By: Devin Dwyer 12/29/11

U.S., Saudi Arabia agree to $30 billion deal for F-15s
By the CNN Wire Staff 12/29/11
Adam Levine and Alan Silverleib contributed to this report.

U.S. to sell fighter jets to Saudi Arabia 12/30/11

After reading the four article about the U.S and the Arabia, it was announce that the United State government signed an agreement with Saudi to sell about $30 billion worth of F-15 fighter jets. The $29.4 billion deal for the backdrop of rising tensions with Iran (up to 84 new F-15SA aircraft and the modernization of 70 current F-15s) along with munitions, spare parts, training, maintenance and logistics. The agreement was "demonstrating the United State commitment to a strong Saudi defense capability as a key component to regional security," Shapiro said. "This sale will send a strong message to countries in the region that the United States is committed to stability in the Gulf and broader Middle East." Administration officials first notified Congress of plans for a major new weapons deal with Saudi Arabia in October 2010. The deal is meant to further align the Saudi military relationship with the United States and equip the kingdom so it can better protect its security and oil structure. The acceptance will total some $24 billion in sales for the Boeing Company, which has produced more than 1,600 F-15s in various models since the first one was delivered in 1972, said company spokesman Dan Beck. Even though the aircraft will be produced in St. Louis, it wasn't clear how many new jobs would result. With some 600 suppliers in 44 states involved in making the aircraft, the program will support 50,000 to 60,000 U.S. jobs.

This story sort of connect to all "federalism, congress, presidency, economic policy and military policy. The reason for this is because the president has a lot to do with it in order for the United State to exchange money and weapon. Money does a lot with economic but not much of policy wide but its money and military because they was weapon us in wars. I'm not sure if my topic connects with what the class are working on but it does a little with the president and the Arabia as of Iraq.

NY TIME: "A Coal-Fired Plant That Is Eager for U.S. Rules" BY MATTHEW L. WALD.January 5, 2012
CHRISTIAN MONITOR:"Climate change models flawed, extinction rate likely higher than predicted" BY Wynne Parry, January 6, 2012
SUMMARY:
As climate change progresses, the planet may lose more plant and animal species than predicted, a new modeling study suggests. U.S. scientists want to expand research into climate change to focus on its social effects and ways to adapt to a changing planet, but tighter budgets may crimp those plans. scientists think the climate change will may continue in 2012. The operators of coal-fired power plants around the country welcome a court-ordered delay on tighter pollution rules.last Friday, a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia issued a stay of the regulations, ceding to challenges filed by several major coal-burning utilities, the State of Texas, the National Mining Association and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
c) last time I researched about people have their own opinions for what cause the climate change.scientists think rate of the snowing will decline in recent years.
d) my issue related to emvironmental policy, economic policy and the courts. The government cut the bugets of the environment. It cause the scientists don't have enough money to do research about environment problems.

BBC, "UK-Ireland borders deal to target illegal immigrants" 20 December 2011
(b) The lack of a coherent, comprehensive immigration policy and one of the many reasons we have no immigration policy: Plain old cold-hearted xenophobia. The administration of President Barack Obama proposed Friday a change to immigration rules meant to cut the time undocumented spouses and children of U.S. citizens are separated from their families while they seek legal status. Obama moves to make it easier for some illegal immigrants to obtain legal status, dismantling hurdles set by congressional Republicans. The step is likely to shore up his support among Latino voters, but it could also polarize the country. The UK and Ireland hope a new cooperation deal will help crack down on illegal immigration.
(c)Last few weeks I also researched about the immigration policy. In this week's research, new US immigration rules could shorten the time families are separated when illegal immigrants apply for a Green Card, the White House has said.
(d)I think this issue is related to Citizenship because most of the illegal immigration want to apply for U.S.citizenship that way they could stay in the U.S. legally. Also, I think this issue is related to International relation because all the immigrants are from around the world. The ways that government treats these immigrants might influence the relationship among countries.

A)
New York Times, Aug. 6, 2010, “Keith Phoenix”
The Christian Science Monitor, June 24, 2011, “Gay marriage: Can Obama stay on tightrope until 2012 elections?”
CNN, January 4, 2012, “Jackson calls for more integrated UK police force
ABC News, January 3, 2012, “NYC Firebombing Suspect Charged with Hate Crime”

B)
Keith Phoenix and his friend, Hakim Scott, were the convicted murderers of José Sucuzhañay. Phoenix and Scott were beating up Sucuzhañay and his brother, Romel Sucuzhañay, because they were Hispanic and mistakenly believed they were gay.
President Obama does support full marriage equality for same-sex couples, but just can’t say it out loud. If he did, it would needlessly inflame social conservatives and potentially alienate swing voters.
The civil rights activist Jesse Jackson had pointed out the failures and mistakes in the investigation about the notorious racist murder more than 18 years ago. Gary Dobson and David Norris were part of a gang of five that attacked a black teenager, Lawrence. Gary and David were both sentenced to more than 14 years, and yet the other three men remain free.
Ray Lazier Lengend, 40, was charged with hate crime for fire bombings that targeted an Islamic center, Hindu temple, a bodega and two private homes.

C)
Last time I also researched about hate crimes. There were many attack because of ethnicity and Latino Immigrants are most likely the victim. The Senators had voted to give the federal government more jurisdiction to prosecute hate crimes and included protections for lesbians, gays, and transgender victims; and yet president Obama couldn’t support same sex-marriage because of inflame social conservatives and potentially alienate swing voters.

D)
A civil rights violation may become a crime if it involves the use or threat of use of force. Hate crimes are intended to hurt and intimidate someone because of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religious, sexual orientation, or disability. Therefore, hate crimes are related to Civil Rights.

3)Carbon dioxide super-scrubber? Potential good news in global warming fight, by Pete Spotts,January 5, 2012

b) The researchers used elaborate computer programs that simulate the climate to analyze whether the rise in severe rainstorms, heavy snowfalls and similar events could be explained by natural variability in the atmosphere. They found that it could not, and that the increase made sense only when the computers factored in the effects of greenhouse gases released by human activities like the burning of fossil fuels.
When Tropical Storm Washi ripped through the southern Philippine city of Cagayan de Oro last weekend, it dumped in one day more than the city's entire average rainfall for the month of December. The devastating flash floods, which have so far claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people, arrived just weeks after a report from the UK's Met Office Hadley Centre for Climate Change indicated that global warming has significantly increased the number of people at risk from flooding globally.
A team of chemists has developed a new compound for drawing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Capturing carbon represents one approach to combating human-triggered global warming, which most climate scientists attribute in some degree to increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide from industrial activity as well as to carbon dioxide released through land-use changes.
C) Last week i also researched about the climate change issues, last week was all about the the climate change cause the ice melted, this week is about the climate change cause too much rainfall and how the scientist tried to cut down the pollution in the air.
d) This issue relate to the Environmental Policy,Economic policy, Social policy, and International relations. Environment Policy, Social Policy,International relations should find the ways or making the decisions about this issue to cut down the pollution that is the cause of the climate change which affect the people that live a round the world. Its also relate to Economic Policy because if the rainfall happen very often in the country the economic will go down.

Issue: Illegal Immigrants
A)
1. Fox” Romney: Illegal Immigrants Who Want a Green Card Must First Return Home “
By Elections-Politics December 09, 2011
2. Christian science Monitor” As Obama tweaks policy on illegal immigrants, will Latino voters swoon? "
By Patrik Jonsson January 7, 2012
3. New York Times” A Common-Sense Immigration Move"
By Editorial January 6, 2012
4. Los Angeles Times” Obama's immigration proposal gives hope to some in limbo"
By Anna Gorman January 9, 2012

B) Mitt Romney said Friday that if elected president he would make illegal immigrants return to their home country in order to get a green card, in an apparent challenge to Newt Gingrich's statement that he would let some illegal immigrants with deep-rooted ties to their community stay. The Obama White House acted Friday to ease the transition from illegal immigrant to legal US resident, another assertion of executive power that sidesteps Congress and a move that some see as calculated to boost the president's standing among Latinos in an election year. The proposed change will undergo a review but doesn't require congressional approval. Under the so-called "hardship waiver," illegal immigrants who are married or otherwise related to US citizens would be able to pick up the waiver before leaving the United States and then be allowed to return almost immediately after picking up visas in their home countries.

C) )Last week I also researched about Illegal Immigrants . In last week, the news sources reported the illegal immigrants pay taxes indirectly through rent and send their children to local schools -- and therefore should be able to vote. In this week , the new sources reported a new rule that would allow certain illegal immigrants with U.S. citizen spouses or parents to stay here while they apply for hardship waivers.

D) I think this issue is related to Policy-making (laws) because this policy is related to a new rule that would allow certain illegal immigrants with U.S citizen spouses to stay America while they apply for hardship waivers.Rather than require the illegal residents to return to their home countries for as many as 10 years before applying for legal US residency, as a 1996 law – approved by a Republican-led Congress – mandates. The proposed change will undergo a review but doesn't require congressional approval.

b. 1. A 15-year-old Dallas teen Jakadrien Turner who was mistakenly deported to Columbia of giving immigration official a fake name remains in question as the girl returned to the United States late Friday. But the known facts of her case are reviving questions about the frequency of mistaken or accidental deportations of US citizens.
2. The Obama administration is taking a major step toward bolstering legal immigration and protecting families. It announced on Friday that it would change a notorious process to avoid separating families when immigrants apply to become legal permanent residents. The new rule would allow immigrants to obtain provisional waivers in the United States before they left to pick up their visas. This means they won’t have to be separated from their families for long, uncertain periods and will go to their consular appointments knowing that they will be able to quickly come home.
3. An Indonesian court on Wednesday sentenced the wife of the top suspect in the 2002 Bali bombings to 27 months in jail for immigration violations. Ruqayyah binti Husein Luceno, a 32-year-old Philippine national, was found guilty of using falsified personal data to get an Indonesian passport. Her husband, Umar Patek, was arrested in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad on Jan. 25, accusing of making the explosives used in the Bali bombings, which killed 202 people. He is awaiting trial.
4. A Chinese man and infant were killed in a botched robbery in Rome, the Chinese Embassy urged Italian authorities to protect Chinese citizens in Italy. Zhou Zheng, 31, and his 9-month-old daughter were killed on Wednesday. The embassy asked Italian authorities to "apply all the necessary measures" to find the killers and bring them to justice.
c. Last time I also did research about articles that are related to immigration that legal citizens are meeting a problem of being held for investigation if they do not have their documents. This time I find out more about deportation of illegal immigrants, and there is a mistake, deporting a girl, in which it can make people mistrust the government’s work. However, president Obama is still working hard on the immigration issue in which last time Obama administration programs intended to detect illegal immigrants who are arrested by local police officers. Now he is making a new rule for illegal immigrants to apply for visa cards without being apart from their family in a long period.
d. These issues are related to immigration. Immigration issues are all over the news. There are deportations of illegal immigration as well as committing crime against immigration law in those articles. Also the protection of immigrants in another country and the rule of immigrants apply for visa card are all connect to the topic of immigration. Immigration issue can also play an important role in politics and in everything.

B) - After reading the news articles based on the economy, President Barack Obama unveiled his new administrative plan. Which expunges the military’s fight of two major wars at once. The President stated, "I firmly believe, and I think the American people understand, that we can keep our military strong -- and our nation secure -- with a defense budget that continues to be larger than roughly the next 10 countries combined." The end of the war will save to National millions, billions and perhaps trillions of dollars. Which from my understanding, it can cause a tumultuous change and minimize the nations debt, put the money towards governmental programs like Medicaid, Social Security and other public assistance programs. Also reported, lingering effects of the recession throttled back the explosive growth of health spending, which totaled $2.6 trillion, or 17.9 percent of the economy. Governments of the world’s leading economies have more than $7.6 trillion of debt maturing this year, with most facing a rise in borrowing costs. Led by Japan’s $3 trillion and the U.S.’s $2.8 trillion, the amount coming due for the Group of Seven nations and Brazil, Russia, India and China is up from $7.4 trillion at this time last year. With a Democratic president in office, two-thirds of Democrats view the country’s future in 2012 favorably. Only about half of Republicans and independents agree. Economic challenges aren’t holding people back from being optimistic about the Nations economy.

C) – Last week I also researched and investigated the news and updates of National economy. Since the previous week, nothing major has changed. Recently, US companies has added 200,000 jobs, which drops the unemployment to 8.5%, which is, then lowest it has been since February 2009.

D) - This issue is related to the International relations and affairs and federalism. The economy is a big issue in many countries around the world. Many of the people put the job of finding a solution into the leaders hands. It’s up to the officials to help the citizens and people.

Economy

CSM: Unemployment rate falls to 8.5%; GOP still using jobs as battering ram by Ron Scherer, January 6, 2012

BBC: Increase in US consumer borrowing, January 9, 2012

(b)The recession, which lasted from December 2007 to June 2009, reined in the growth of health spending as many people lost jobs, income and health insurance. The decline in foreign visitors over the past decade is costing American businesses and workers $859 billion in untapped revenue and at least half a million potential jobs. For now, during the recovery, economy in the U.S has been slowly rising. The unemployment rate fell from 8.7 percent to 8.5 percent, its lowest level since February 2009. As more people getting jobs, US consumers are borrowing again and adds to a string of good economic news.

(c)Last week, I focus on the poverty and wealth in the U.S. This week I did my research on the U.S economic status lately, showing that after the recession which now in the recovery, economy began to rise, and unemployment rate has fallen.

(d) This issue is related to economic policy because this effort is referring to the action that the government took to influence the U.S economy, including setting interest rates , regulating the level of government expenditures, creating private property rights, and setting tax rates something like that.

4. Science Daily, :Global Warming ‘Not Slowing Down,’ Say Researchers” By ScienceDaily, December 5, 2011

a. Global warming has become perhaps the most complicated issue facing world leaders. Warnings from the scientific community are becoming louder, as an increasing body of science points to rising dangers from the ongoing buildup of human-related greenhouse gases — produced mainly by the burning of fossil fuels and forests. Scientists have announced a potential breakthrough in developing a new material that removes carbon dioxide from the air. CO2 scrubbing could be a useful tool against global warming. But, until today, there are no signs that show the global warming is slowing down, and what can we do to prevent it.

b. Last month, I researched the United Nations Climate Change conference in Durban, South Africa and some of the causes of global warming. As today, global warming becomes a world issues. Many scientists and researchers are looking for a way to prevent it keeps growing. But as today, there are no sign of global warming is slowing down.

c. This issue related to “Environmental Policy”. There are many factors the causes global warming, but only a small amount of people noticed what the factors are. If a person can smoke less, it will brings a big different to the environment.

"Penn Live"-"Jerry Sandusky's book, 'Touched,' helped police investigation into alleged sex crimes"
By: Sara Ganim
Published: January 08, 2012

B) in this article the Penn state president is trying to overcome the bad name that Jerry Sandusky has brought to the school. He explains that he had to let go of Joe Paterno becasue of how close he worked with Sandusky. The crowd felt that this wasn't the best thing that the school's persident should've done because of all the games Paterno led the school to win. Along with Joe two other officials were let go because they failed to let the local law officials no about the allegations of Sandusky molesting young boys when they were head of campus police. in my second article i found little difference from the first. Many people are upset with Penn States president's choice of removing Paterno. i think the reason is because of his great time that he shared with the school coaching it.Joe is 85 and would've been coaching at Penn State for a total of 46 years. I am beginning to see that the Penn state scandal is starting to die down. The reason for that is all of the articles main focuses are about ht e actual football team. In my article form the CSM i found that Penn state was discussing contracts with a Bill O' Brien. He is a offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Many reasons that students are fighting to have a different coach is that they are scared they will not be his main focus. With the playoffs closing in the Patriots will need him in their practices. Not to mention that all of the Division 1 schools will start recruiting new high school seniors for the fall season. But many questions are still unanswered about who will take over the Nittany Lions. I found my final article to be the most interesting. it was about how Scandusky incriminated himself. In the book that he wrote, "Touched", he talked about the countless young boys that he touches. Police are now gathering together with the victims mother's in order to find out more information on what Sandusky may have done to them. Overall i found that Penn State is trying to get far away from the Scandusky drama so that the school can be bettered. I feel that it is a choice that the president had to make, relieving Paterno, in order to do that. And i agree a lot with the president said when he was at the conference, "It in not the Penn State Scandal, it's the Scandusky Scandal."

C)Over the last couple of weeks the tone has drastically dropped. Not many people are talking about what the case is about anymore. i think that is because as time goes by people forget about old news. Now the only thing that people are mainly focused on is the presidential campaign.

D) This topic relates to what we just got done in class and that is social media. I believe that more people are blogging about the Penn State Scandal than the news is actually broadcasting. And maybe there is a gatekeeper who is restricting the limits of how long the scandal should be focused on and that's why the hype has begun to die down.

New York Times: Why Washington Irving High Must Close
Christian Science Monitor: Parochial Schools: Out of Cities, Into the Suburbs
6abc: 48 Philly-area Catholic schools to close or merge
CNN: More than 100 U.S. schools closed because of swine flu
The three articles I read were Why Washington Irving High Must Close” (New York Times), Parochial School: Out of Cities, into the Suburbs” (Christian Science Monitor), “48 Philly-area Catholic schools to close or merge” (6abc), “More than 100 U.S. schools closed because of swine flu” (CNN). Generally all of my articles talked about school like Washington Irving High and Catholic schools must close. These schools were being closed due to the fact that the school has been failing for decades. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia plans to close four Roman Catholic high schools and close or combine 44 elementary schools due to rising costs and low enrollment. Dozens of other schools are recommended to be part of a consolidation plan. Parishes will be able to appeal the closings, but they must be able to present compelling evidence of something overlooked. They have until March, and then the list will be implemented. Closings will take place in June. Earlier this month, Roman Catholic schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey faced an unfamiliar challenge: striking teachers. Bracing for news of which schools would close this fall. The situation contrasted sharply with that of wealthy suburbs such as Potomac, Md., where parents camped out for two days to gain their child a spot at the newly renovated and expanding School of Our Lady of Mercy.

My article wasn’t able to change much because I had to change my top to a broader one because my previous top articles were not changing.
This connects to federalism because schools were at first the power over school districts was given to the states, but due to the many schools that are lacking in testing and attendance the federal government is becoming more involved than usual.
